How can we write better software?

There has always been research on how to write better software. For some reasons, the knowledge accumulated since 1970s is lost. Software is written with new technologies and patterns that do not look on the past. Modern software often does not stand on the shoulders of giants. I am writing my opinions based on my experiences.
